Rachel Romero’s journey through the world of engineering is a testament to resilience, identity, and a relentless pursuit of excellence – shaped profoundly by her experiences within the MESA program.
Rachel’s early involvement in MESA at Eisenhower Jr. High and later at the Academy for Math, Engineering, and Science provided her with a supportive community where she thrived among peers who shared her enthusiasm for science and technology. These formative years not only ignited Rachel’s passion for engineering but also fostered a sense of belonging that would guide her through her educational and professional endeavors.
Rachel’s college experience was marked by challenges, including navigating failure and managing her mental health. However, through the support of friends and family, she persevered, emerging stronger and more resilient. She now thrives in her graduate studies, finding joy and fulfillment in the pursuit of knowledge and innovation.
After graduating from the University of Utah with a Bachelor’s degree in Chemical Engineering in 2019, Rachel continued her academic journey, currently pursuing a Master’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, also at the University of Utah. Her dedication to expanding her knowledge and skills reflects her commitment to pushing the boundaries of what is possible in her field.
Rachel’s career path has been dynamic and transformative. She started as a metallurgist in Tucson, Arizona, where she gained valuable experience in materials science before transitioning to Northrop Grumman as a Process Engineer. Currently enrolled in a rotational program, Rachel is exploring various roles within the company, eager to discover her true passion and make a meaningful impact in her field.
Throughout her academic and professional journey, Rachel has embraced her identities as a proud biracial queer woman in engineering, finding strength and inspiration in her unique perspective. She actively participated in organizations such as the Society of Women Engineers (SWE) and STEP, where she not only found community but also contributed to initiatives promoting diversity and inclusivity in STEM.
Beyond her professional achievements, Rachel finds happiness in life’s simple pleasures: a good cup of coffee, the warmth of the sun on her skin, and the company of loved ones. Her positive outlook and appreciation for life’s joys reflect her resilient spirit and ability to find beauty in every moment.
