What does MESA mean to you? Here’s what it meant for Shawnice.

Shawnice Thomas

Shawnice’s love for engineering began in middle school, sparked by her participation in the MESA Prosthetic Arm Competition in PG County, Maryland. That hands-on experience ignited a passion for problem-solving that set the stage for her future in STEM. With hard work and determination, Shawnice earned a full scholarship to Morgan State University, where she excelled both academically and as a leader.

Shawnice’s story will be shared in MESA classrooms across Maryland and beyond through her custom poster. If you can see it – you can be it!

Now, as a Model-Based Systems Engineer at Johns Hopkins University Applied Physics Laboratory, Shawnice is making waves in the engineering world and advocating for greater diversity in STEM fields. Her journey from MESA to a leader in her field is a powerful example of how Maryland MESA means students are inspired to reach their greatest heights.
